iii iiiiiiiiiiiuiii ~
Divisional Correspondence ONy
STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
TO: John Woodling DATE: Ju17 28, 1993
FROM: John Alves
RE: SLV fish investigations pertaining to mining operations
Enclosed are lake and stream surveys conducted in 1992 and 1993 on La Jara Creek, Terrace
Reservoir and Rito Seco Creek. These investigations were designed to monitor the influence
of mining operations at Summitville and Battle Mountain Gold Mine otl the fisheries of
these waters.
It appears that irrigation diversions from the Alamosa River to Ls Jara Creek near
Capulin, has impacted the fishery of La Jara Creek. Electrofishing surveys revealed fish
populations upstream of the diversions and well downstream of the diversions, however a
fishery is missing between these sites.
A gill net survey at Terrace Reservoir in 1990, following a reported sF:ill at Summitville
Mine, revealed that mining pollution had eliminated the trout fishery. The 1993 lake
survey report supports that analysis.
The Rito Sego Creek trout fishery, above and below the Battle Mountain Mine supports
adequate populations of brown and brook trout. There is evidence of si:.tation and erosion
created by road construction at the mine.
Electrofishing surveys are planned for the Alamosa River this fall. Flease provide maps
of the Wightman Fork tributary streams requested for surveys by the SI~A. I'll try to fit
this work into my schedule for August as requested.
cc: Langlois
Apker
Malmsbury
Albert
Rauch
Navo
Harry Posey (Minerals and Geology)
Andrew Archuleta (USFWS)
