VanHouten '' ~i~ I
DAV:87:01 ~~~
SUBJECT: Reclamation Cost, Per Acre
DATE: January 19, 1987

FEQ 05 1987,
MINE) LAND
RECLAMATION DIVISION
I feel that it is impossible to quote a "cost per acre" price for reclamation of
disturbed areas in general because of innumerable conditions and varying
circumstances that affect proceedure. Therefore, I will describe as best I can the
conditions and circumstances associated with our last major project and supply the
actual cost of seed and equipment plus man hours that we used on the project. Bare
in mind that since we did not survey the project, much of the information is based
on astimat~s.
Description of project:
Road bed width - 12' to 40', average 15'
Grade - 6% to 18%, average 120
Slope of natural terrain - 1 1/2 to 1 through 3 to
Material - dozed shale rock to black topsoil
Acreage - 13
Access - from upper end only
Backslope height - 8' to 20'
1, average 2/1
Equipment used:
Case trackhoe, Model 40 with 1 yd. bucket at approximate
$5,000,00 mo. rental Total cost
Manpower used:
Equipment operator 205 hrs.
Environmental technician 115 hrs.
Seed (actual cost)
$10,000.00
P.L.S., grass and shrub mixture $8,540.00
Wheat grass mixture 840.00
Fertilizer 410.00
Actual seed cost $753.00 acre
Note: Actual seed cost is approximately 22% higher than the prescribed
requirement. This was done because the resulting terrain defies easy
or economical reseeding; therefore, we hope to get adequate ground cover
and root systems established with the first planting to preclude access
to the area in the future.
Summary:
Total cost per acre, excluding manpower cost, considering the above
circumstances slightly exceeds $1,500.00
