Long
Box 153 Division Director
2555 No. Highway 89A Division of Minerals ~ Geob9Y
Fredonia AZ 86022
Re: West Sunday Mine, Permit M-81-021, Updated Permit Area Map
Dear Mr. Smith,
I received the updated permit area map on April 18, 1998, which I had required to be submitted
to abate a problem (PB) which I noted during my July 10, 1997, inspection. This map was to
have been received by October 31, 1997, a date we had agreed on. You had mentioned that this
map had already been submitted, but there is no evidence of its receipt in either of the Division's
offices. I have had a chance to review the map, and have a few comments about it. I have
included a copy of this newly submitted map, and have made some notes on it, some of which will
pertain to the following items
1. The five-sided area which is delineated, though it does completely encompass the surface
disturbance present at the portal area, does not comform to the boundary that appears on all of
the other permit area maps in this file. I have enclosed a copy of the new map, and have
superimposed the original permit boundaries in green. The polygon on the new map is about 13.1
acres. On the old maps the portal area is 9.95 acres, with sides oriented along the axis of the
2700-foot decline drift toward the Beebee claims.
2. Portions of the azea delineated by the new boundaries are lands for which we have no evidence
of the operator's right of entr,~, and which have not been approved for mining disturbance and
reclamation. (The waste rock on the east end, for example, appears to have crossed the thalweg
of the ephemeral drainage by 110 feet.) Other delineated lands on the new map appear to exclude
areas which have previously been approved for mining disturbance and reclamation. In summary,
it appears as if you are proposing an acreage reduction plus an amendment to add new land.
