We toured the
surface facilities with Vaughn McCollister, an engineer at the mine. Our
attention was focused upon the discharging of mine waters encountered with-
in the workings the day before our visit. A crew developing a longwall
panel had broY.en through into previously abandoned, 7-year o1 d, adjoining
workings, in order to develop cross-cut ventilation. Shortly following
the actual breakthrough, water began emanating from the floor in the area
of the cross-cut.
The mine's engineering staff had collected several water specimens for quality
analysis immediately prior to our arrival, which were dispatched to a Iab
in Hotchkiss. These specimens will be analyzed for conformance with the
mine's existing NP DS' permit. The results are to be reported to our office
upon completion of the testing.
i The mine is currently pumping water from the flooded area of a rate of
approximately I00 gallons per minute. Water is being discharged into the
Notth Fork of the Gunnison River through a culvert which is a portion of
the existing diversion system at the mine bench. The pH of the water sample
has been tested at approximately 8.0, which falls within the allowed limits
of their NPDS permit.
We informed Vaughn that, if the discharge was within NPDS limits, it would
be allowable. The engineering staff believes the water accumulation to be
the result of seven years of collection within the abandoned works. Further,
they anticipate that, once dewatered, very little additional infiltration
should occur into those workings. It is imperative that these workings be
dewatered because of the characteristic floor bumping problem which exists
at the Hawk's Nest mine, which can be exacerbated by the presence of
' standing water within the workings.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Strert Denver, CDloradD 8~2~3 Tel.
