III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
999
EDNA MINE - 1996 EROSION INVENTORY REPORT
OVERVIEW
Section 4.3 of Perrnlt No. C-80-001 requires an annual erosion inventory of the Edna Mine's
permanently reclaimed lands that remain under bond. The permit requires that an inventory
report be submitted to the CDMG on or before July 15th of each year. The first erosion
inventory report of this process was done in the spring of 1993 after the initial approval of the
referenced permit section. The second inventory was conducted in the fall of 1993 for the 1994
report. With further changes in the permit language the inventories are now done in the spring
of each year, starting with the 1995 annual erosion Inventory.
Areas permanently reclaimed that are required to be irnentoried under the plan include the
reclaimed areas, to date, on the Moffat Area, an approximately 10 acre strip in the South of
Shop Area and areas permanently reclaimed on West Ridge. The West Ridge area is no longer
exempt from inventory requirements following the completion of the terreces in 1995. Several
new blocks have been designated and are detailed in Exhibit 1, Sheet 2. The newer areas of West
Ridge, namely those above the old haul road and the lower areas redisturbed for terrace
construction, have not had the permanent seed mixture applied yet. These areas are still
included in the irnerrtory because grading has been completed on the areas and a corer crop
planted. Permanent seed in these areas will be distributed in the fall of 1996. Results of the
inventory are described below. The inventoried areas are referenced to Exhibit 1, Sheets 1 and
2, of thls report.
Annual erosion inventory data from past years is included in the tables to allow a comparison.
INVENTORY METHODS
Pedestrian and vehicular surveys of permanently reclaimed areas were conducted to Inventory
erosion features. Individual features and entire sites were evaluated as outlined in Sectbn 4.3.
The existing condition of the single concentrated flow feature, identified in the 1992 report in
the South of Shop Area, and the three features, which were initiated in 1995, on the Goat Trail
were documented using method (1) ("Cross-Section Survey") outlined in Pemrt No. C-80-
001, Section 4.3. This method was chosen to determine the rate of degradation or agradation
within these reaches over time.
To evaluate the overall erosion condition of various reclaimed areas, the Bureau of Land
Management's Erosion Condition Classification System described in Technical Note No. 346 was
utilized. This method considers both sheet, and rill and gully erosion, and documents the overall
erosion condition of a given site. This method is described in detail in Permit No. C-80-001,
Appendix 4.3-B.
