Long
To: Steve Renner
From: Randy Price
Dale: 02//5/!994
Subject: Proposal, Mine Nomina(io(t, Marr S[rip Mine, Large Surface Mine, C-80-006
I propose to nominate the Kerr Coal Company, Marr Strip Mine for a reclamation award. [believe
that this mine has done exemplary work this past year by backfilling the 720 pit in seven mon(hs
rather than at the approved schedule of about eight to ten years. The earlier reclamation means that
there would be less disturbed area exposed to erosion, minimizing adverse impacts to the hydrology
and air quality. The area will return to beneficial use for wildlife habitat and rangeland 8 years earlier.
The Marr Strip mine is located about 9 miles east of the town of Walden, Jackson county, Colorado,
within the northern section of North Park. The Marr mine is an open pit mine that at one time had an
overburden stockpile of 7.5 million cubic yards, nicknamed "Marr mountain." The immense pile that
once stood out as a landmark has been replaced by an undulating rolling landscape This summer the
area will be topsoiled and seed to begin the process of returning to beneficial use.
