Long
Div~s~on Director
Thank you for your concerns about the Marr Strip Mine remaining open. I can speak for
the Division and the Mined Land Reclamation Board and that we agree with you and would
like to see the Marr Strip Mine remain open and mining coal. The Colorado Surface Coal
Mining Reclamation Act, led to the development of the current program that administers
the laws that govern coal mining in this state. In this Act the Legislative declaration states
that:
"...surface coal mining operations and the reclamation of land affected by such
operations are both necessary and proper activities. The purpose of this article "the
Act" is to assure that the coal required for local and national energy needs and for
economic and social well-being is provided and to provide a balance among the
protection of the environment, agricultural productivity, and the need for coal as an
essential source of energy."
The Division is committed to this and will work with the Kerr Coal Company to keep this
mine operating and producing coal. If you would like to contact Kerr Coal directly the
address is listed below. A copy of your letter will be forwarded to Kerr Coal.
Mr. George Patterson
Kerr Coal Company
P.O. Box 487
Walden, CO 80480
Thank you for your concern and if you have any questions please feel to call me.
Sincerely
.~~
Randall P.
