At approxi-
mately 6:05 p.m., I tried to call the Mautzes again. Elaine Mautz answered the phone and told me
that the Mautz land has been destroyed; she then called Larry Mautz to the phone to talk with me.
Larry Mautz stated the following:
- MCC has taken 800 acres of land away from us (Mautzes).
- The cracks and craters are large enough to drive a Ford Bronco into them.
- He "got to walk off the mountain today" (implying that Boulay stranded him).
- The cracks make ranch roads impassable.
- Due to safety concerns, the July 5, 1996, rodeo was canceled.
- Larry Mautz contacted Phil Schmidt (MCC), and Larry claims Phil laughed at Larry,
saying, "You knew there was a mine when you bought the property." Larry claims
Phil Schmidt stated that MCC is only responsible for structure damage.
- When walking off Jumbo Mountain today, Larry observed many cracks in the forest.
- Larry states he is now out of business because he cannot put hunters on this unsafe land.
- Larry says his crop has been destroyed, explaining that the land is now unsafe for use and
will be until the cracks heal.
