Long,
Division Diroclar
RE: Adequacy Review; Proposed Technical Revision No. 007; Tailings
Cyanide Detoxification using Hydrogen Peroxide; Battle
Mountain Gold Company; San Luis Project; M-88-112.
Dear Mr. Douchane:
The Division has the following comments regarding the proposed
introduction of H2O2 into the tailings ponds as described in the
technical revision cited above. These comments must be adequately
addressed before the technical revision can be approved.
The proposed revision needs to specify how the effects of HzOZ
within the pond will be monitored. Although we have not
received a formal report characterizing the variation in
cyanide species in the ponds, we understand from verbal
communications that the pond is stratified with respect to
cyanide. Thus, the sampling protocol that will be used to
monitor the WAD cyanide concentrations needs to be specified
in this Technical Revision, and that protocol needs to specify
how representative samples will be gathered. The monitoring
will need to establish the present levels of WAD cyanide in
the ponds.
The Division is interested in the impact of the HZ02 treatment
on the tails introduced into the ponds from the processing
plant spigot. The monitoring system proposal should
specifically address this topic.
The Division examined the H2O2 distribution system in the
field on May 28. As currently constructed, the distribution
lines are not anchored and move with the prevailing winds.
The Technical Revision should indicate how the lines will be
secured, and how they will be maneuvered over the ponds to
affect distribution of the HZOZ.
