TRAPPER MINING INC.
III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
January 9, 1992
CERTIFIED #P782939281
Mr. Kent Gorham
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
215 Centennial Bldg.
1313 Sherman St.
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Kent:
RE: Follow-up correspondence for MR-115
"Replacement Domestic Water Well for GD-1"
- ~ ~~ ~ -. J .i • . ~ l'am'
JAN 13 199.
IYiin~d Land
As part of Trapper's requirement for the approval of MR-115 (Field Revision)
"Replacement Well for Trapper's Domestic Water Well - GD-1;' I'm submitting an expla-
nation of what led to this revision request and several revised permit application pages.
Several other permit pages will be revised and submitted to the Division once the new
domestic well construction is completed.
During mid-October 1991 Trapper began experiencing a decrease in the amount of water
produced in our domestic well. The quality of the water was not impacted, only the quan-
tity produced by the well. On October 26, 1991, Trapper shut down our domestic well to
initiate repairs and determine the cause of the wells decline in production. Trapper,
through the services of an outside contractor "Howards Aquasystems;' has determined that
the well casing partially collapsed approximately 1,000' below the surface where the screen
intercepts the aquifer. Apparently the screen may not have been stainless steel and cor-
roded (originally installed in June 1975) or the sucking action of the pump accelerated the
deposition of sediments around the screen causing it to partially plug up. Regardless, the
decision was made by Trapper to initiate the drilling of a new, reliable domestic water
source. Since the well shutdown in October, Trapper has been hauling water from the City
of Craig to supplement our water needs. The GD-1 well is currently pumping approxi-
mately 12 gpm of the needed 75 gpm water requirement for Trapper Mine. Trapper pro-
posed to utilize the GD-1 well as a backup system to the new domestic water well (GD-
1(2)). This would aid in ensuring that Trapper would have adequate, reliable potable
water in emergency situations.
Please find enclosed revised permit pages 4-223, 4-226f, and 4-242 and a copy of the well
permit application form submitted to the Colorado Division of Water Resources. Once
the well is completed, permit pages 2-456, 2-459, 2-514 and 4-224 will be submitted.
Accompanying these permit pages will be well completion information and a lithological
log to update Appendix V Part E. In the event the GD-1 well fails, Trapper will abandon
this domestic water well in accordance with appropriate Colorado regulations and
Trapper's approved mining and reclamation permit and a report submitted to the Division.
P.0. Box 187 Craig, Colorado 81626 (303) 824-4401
