The belief at the time
of preparation of the plan was that our needs for gravel after 1979 would
not be great enough to warrant continued extraction from this pit. However,
a closer assessment of the availability of local gravel and the associated
haulage distances has shown this pit to be desirable. We will have con-
tinued gravel needs for the foreseeable future and probably for the life of
the Henderson Mine. Therefore, we would like to change the timetable in
our permit with respect to this one area only.
Affected land boundaries do not need adjustment. All disturbance will
be contained to presently disturbed lands. Continued public visibility will
be mitigated by the construction of a 5- to 9-foot undulating berm as a
visual screen between the county road and the pit. The berm will be con-
structed of overburden, graded to about 2.5:1, covered with topsoil and
planted to "open forest" utilizing some larger trees (3 to 6 feet tall) to
increase its screening and blending qualities and accelerate the reclamation
process.
Ultimate reclamation of the pit will be to open forest as defined in the
reclamation plan and will generally proceed from north to south in sequence
as mining progresses from north to south. It is expected that extraction
within approximately five of the eleven acres will be completed and can be
totally reclaimed by 1983. The remaining six acres will be reclaimed as
mining progresses. If necessary, mining might also progress into the gravel
storage yard which we have already indicated would not be reclaimed until
near the end of Henderson activity in about 2006.
