• March 2000 -23- 993-2099.150
3.0 SITE SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
3.1 Previous Site Investigations
Several site investigations have been previously performed to characterize the subsurface
features near the former site of the Carlton Mill. However, these studies concentrated
primarily on characterizing the tailing material eventually excavated in 1994 and 1995 as part
of the Phase II site preparation activities. In January of 1997, Golder issued a report titled
"Cresson Project, Phase /I Heap Leach Pad Expansion Design" in which the design for
Phase II was documented. This report included site investigation data focused on the native
and fill materials in the vicinity of the former site of the Carlton Mill. It was submitted to
the OMLR with a March 20, 1997 letter by CCBcV titled "Cresson Project; Permit No.
M-80-244: Technical Revision For Expansion of Phase 77 of Cresson Project Ual[ey Leach
Facility", (CC&V, 1997b) and approved by the OMLR in 1997. In July of 1998, Golder
issued a report titled "Cresson Project, Valley Leach Facility, Phase III Design" in which the
design of the Phase III VLF was documented. This report was submitted by CCBcV to the
OMLR as part of Amendment No. 7 (CC&V, 1998). Information pertaining to the Phase IV
VLF are summarized in the following sections.
3.2 Golder Site Investigation
Golder personnel performed a site reconnaissance within the limits of Phase III and
Phase IV from February 25 through February 27, 1998 to evaluate the foundation
conditions within the footprint of these areas. The geotechnical investigation included a
site reconnaissance and test pit program. Test pits within the Phase III footprint were
presented in the Amendment No. 7 document (CCBzV 1998). Three test pits were
excavated in the Phase IV area by Conley Construction (Conley) using a Case 9040
• traclchoe. Golder personnel supervised and logged each test hole and test pit, and collected
samples where appropriate, for subsequent laboratory testing.
I:\94\'_099\FINAL REPORT3099MAIN2.DOC Golder Associates
