• March 2000 -24- 993-2099.150
Golder personnel performed additional field investigations in the Phase IV area under two
field programs performed in April and May of 1998. The first part of the field program
consisted of a test pit excavation, in which twenty-seven test pits were excavated from
April 21 through April 27, 1998. The second part of the field program consisted of
drilling fourteen boreholes (twelve Becker hammer boreholes and three companion sample
holes) from April 24 through May 3, 1998. Test pits were excavated by Conley using a
Case 9040 trackhoe, and boreholes were drilled by Layne-Western Drilling. Golder
supervised and logged each test pit, supervised each borehole, and collected samples for
subsequent laboratory testing where appropriate. The results of the laboratory test data are
presented in Appendix B-1.
The logs of the test pits and boreholes from the Phase IV investigations are presented in
Appendix A. The locations of the test pits and boreholes are shown on Drawing No. 2.
3.3 Site Geotechnical Conditions
Three test pits (GA98-11, GA98-12, and GA98-13) were excavated in February of 1998 in
the area of the Phase IV footprint, to the east of the existing Phase I VLF. These test pits
were excavated to depths ranging from approximately 3 feet to 18 feet. The soils
encountered in the test pits consisted of one foot of growth medium, which was underlain
by highly weathered bedrock at a depth of 1 to 8 feet. The soils above the weathered
bedrock generally consisted of silty sands which classify as an SM under the Unified Soil
Classification System (USCS). Ground water was not encountered in any of the test pits.
Twenty seven test pits (TP98-1, TP98-2, TP98-3, TP98-4, TP98-5, TP98-7, TP98-9,
TP98-10, TP98-11, TP98-12, TP98-13, TP98-14, TP98-15, TP98-16, TP98-17, TP98-18,
TP98-19, TP98-20, TP98-21, TP98-22, TP98-23, TP98-24, TP98-25, TP98-26, TP98-27,
• TP98-28 and TP98-29) were excavated from April 21 through April 27, 1998 in the
general area of the Phase IV footprint. The test pit logs are presented in Appendix A-1.
I:\93\309TFINAL REPORT20-9MAINl.DOC Golder Associates
