I have completed a review of the following sections of the PAP for
the Roadside Portals Mine:
2.04.5 General Description of Hydrology and Geology
2.04.6 Geology Description
2.04.7 Hydrology Description
2.05.6(3) Protection of Hydrologic Balance
2.06.8 Alluvial Valley Floors
My comments follow:
1) On page 54, the operator states, "The water table is
discontinuous due to the interbedded sandstones and /
shales of the upper portion of the Mesa Verde formation ,/
which in itself is discontinuous." Is the operator
inferring that the Mesa Verde Formation is discontinuous
or that the Mesa Verde Formation is comprised of
discontinuous beds? This should be clarified in the PAP.
2) On page 56, the discussion of groundwater quality should
reference any baseline studies that have been conducted
for ground water.
3) On page 60, the operator states, "Though recharge occurs
at a slow rate because permeability is low, beds lower
than the river are not continuously recharged. In ~
contrast, recharge is discontinuous and occurs at an even
lower rate to beds above the level of the Colorado
River." These two statements, considered together, seem
a bit ambiguous and slightly contradictory. This should
be clarified in the PAP.
4) The section on Protection of the Hydrologic Balance,
which begins on page 202f, should be updated to reflect
the opening of the Roadside North portal. In 1994, the
