Pikeview Quarry.
Permit NM-77-211
Dear Mr. Schreiner:
~~N
8 1984
HAND DEL/VERED
In your February 3, 1994, inspection report of this operation you made note of some
corrective actions you thought should be taken. These actions primarily involved repairing
some erosional problems on a couple of the slopes south of the shop. One erosional channel
(west of the drainage) was very deep and appeared to be slowly expanding. The other area
involved some shallow rills near the top of the slope south of the shop. A third corrective
action involved backfilling some small cut slopes on the inside of an access road that was
never completed.
The erosional damages to the shop slope (large gully and small rills) were repaired in May.
The sites were topsoiled and seeded. A small portion of the rills due south of the shop is still
exposed, but the deep soil layer above those rills should repair as soil washes down from
above. There was simply no way to get the equipment to that area without running a dozer
down the hill all the way to the bottom. That would undoubtedly cause far more damage than
leaving maybe a hundred square feet of shallow rills that should fill in as the soil adjusts
upslope from them. The soil was placed on the slope with a backhoe. That was the only kind
of equipment that could do the work without actually going on to the slope. This small area
was just beyond the reach of the backhce. Therefore, extra soil was placed above the
remaining rills with the expectation that some of that soil will wash down the slope. Due to the
steepness of this slope, that movement is expected to occur by late summer. In the event it
does not occur to the extent expected, soil will be shoveled over that area by hand this next fall
and winter and that portion seeded when completed.
