File No. - 77-211 <br />4. Operation type - Quarry aggregate-limestone <br />5. General location - Two miles northwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. <br />6. Affected land-140 acres. <br />7. History of the Mine - <br />Most of the area occupied by the Pikeview Quarry was mined in the <br />1950 & 1960's by other companies. The material was used as the <br />primary source of aggregate to build the U.S. Air Force Academy. <br />P,, Mining Plan <br />a. Tract description - <br />I. Tract A - this area occupies the major part of the mine <br />and covers 90% of the previous mined area and will contain <br />most of the proposed mining. <br />II. Tract B - Half will be used for mining and the other part <br />for access. <br />III. Tract C - ~•lining will be completed in this area at first. <br />IV. Tract A-1- ldill be used for support facilities and buffer <br />zone. No mining. <br />b. Amount of topsoil - All previously mined areas have had the top- <br />soil and overburden removed. On the other parts of the quarry <br />it may be less then 3 inches and too steep to be saved. But <br />l~ihat topsoil and overburden can be saved will be stockpiled. <br />c. P4ininp Method - <br />The limestone is drilled and blasted at which time a Eateroiller is <br />brought into remove the rock to a stockpile where it is loaded <br />nn trucks and taken to a processing site ~.ahere it is hauled off by <br />truck when needed. <br />d. Timetable - <br />I. Currently in tract C- will continue mining for 20 more years - <br />24 acres. <br />
