OF MINERALS Mont zuma Coun[y
& GEOLOGY
Permit No. M-97-089
Dear Mr. Long and Mr. Buchanan:
Susan Campbell Bell called Wallace Erickson of the Colorado Department of Minerals and
Geology, San Juan Regional office today to inquire as to whether he was going to respond to The
Friends of Sorrth Morrtezrrnra 6'alley, Grc. letter dated September 9, 1998. She asked if he had
been to the mining operation to inspect the site. She explained that The Friends of,Sorrth
Morrte~rrmn valley, hrc., were concerned that Mr. Stone is in violation of his permit (see
September 9'" letter).
He informed Susan that he had a very busy schedule and that he had thirty days to complete the
inspection. She asked when he anticipated going to the mining operation for an inspection. He
said in the next week or two. He said that he had not spoken to Mr. Stone. She explained that
the thirty days would be up on October 10 and that if he waited two weeks he would be past the
thirty-day limitation. She then asked if he would be doing the inspection on October I" 2"" 5'"
6'h, 7'h, 8~' or 9~'. He stated that he would be doing the inspection on a work day.
She then stated that the inspection would have to be done by October 9'" in order to meet the
thirty-day deadline. She also asked if he had contacted Daren Stone, the operator, to set a date.
He said he had not. She stated that if his schedule was so busy it would seem that he would
already have made an appointment with the operator. He stated that if Susan had a complaint
about him she should take it to the Board.
On Wednesday, September 23, 1998 Susan Campbell Bell went to the mining area to speak to
Daren Stone. Daren told her that Mr. Erickson told him that she had measured the mining area
with a measuring wheel. Obviously, Mr. Erickson had spoken to Mr. Stone sometime between
September 10, 1998 and September 23, 1998. Mr. Stone told Susan that she had no right to do
that and that she had no right to be on the property. Susan explained to Daren that she had a
letter dated September 16, 1998 from the BLM, San Juan Resource Area, stating that access to
the public land remains open and that a hard hat will be made available for anyone wishing to tour
the operation. Susan also observed that there were a number of bales of hay sitting on the ground
in the area of what she thought to be unit one.
