Mr. Mike Long
Mr. Wade Buchanan
September 30, 1998
Page 2
Mr. Erickson has continually put our requests off for the thirty-day limitation. It would seem to
me that if a violation is suspected that the Department of Minerals and Geology would be willing
to inspect the mining operation in question as soon as possible. It appears that the previous
pattern has been that Mr. Erickson will notify Mr. Stone of questions regarding violations. This
gives Mr. Stone an opportunity to comply before an inspection is made.
Mr. Bob Jorgenson of the Colorado Department of Health and Environment has been most
cooperative when The Frrends of S'o:dh Montezuma Valley, hrc. have suspected a violation with
regard to fugitive dust and opacity ratings. It is unfortunate that Mr. Stone's mining operation is
blocking the view of the Ute Mountain. Mr. Jorgenson has been more than willing to send an
inspector to the mining site immediately. Mr. Jorgenson's willingness to cooperate certainly is a
contrast to Mr. Erickson's behavior. Since both of these are governmental agencies I would like
to believe that they both would respond to the needs of the citizens of Colorado in a timely
manner.
Susan also asked Mr. Erickson if he knew whether the County of Montezuma had applied for a
permit for a gravel pit on County Road W in Montezuma County. He stated that to his
knowledge no permit had crossed his desk. She then asked Mr. Erickson if it was possible that
the permit could have crossed the desk of another individual. He stated that it might have crossed
the desk of Tom Gillis. I would hope that the employees of DMG would be willing to explain to
citizens that the process first takes place in Denver and then the permit is processed through the
Durango office. Citizens should not have to tish for information. This agency, I assume, is an
agency that should service concerned citizens. Employees of the Durango office should be willing
to give out complete and proper information.
A request for a hearing was made to Mr. Erickson some time ago from some of the citizens
surrounding the County Road W gravel operation. As of this date no information has been given
to these individuals. Mr. Erickson should be willing to share proper information and direct such
inquiries to the person or persons in charge in the Denver office.
The Friends of S'ourh Montezuma L'alley, brc. are requesting your attention to their September 9,
1998 letter. We would hope that an inspection could be completed soon and the report could also
be completed in a timely manner. We do not feel that our request is unrealistic since a question of
violation should be considered an important issue and should take precedence over daily
operations.
