In order to properly design <br />repairs to these areas, specifically the upper conveyor bents and the screening <br />plant azeas, shallow core drilling must be conducted. Two to three holes, no <br />more than 40 ft. deep will be drilled at each site. The holes will then be <br />backfilled with the cuttings. All sites can be drilled from the existing access. <br />West Elk Mine's new access road has settled, creating a depression above the <br />lower fill wall. A hole will be drilled at this site as well, to determine if a water <br />saturated horizon exists. Geotechnical engineers from Envirocon, Inc. and <br />GeoWest (the designing engineers) have inspected the site and believe it is likely <br />just settling of the road base under the asphalt. Depending on the outcome of <br />this test hole, the site may either be excavated, recompacted and resurfaced or <br />the depression merely resurfaced and/or the ditch to the south lined. <br />MCC has removed all of the underground storage tanks from the West Elk Mine <br />site. The waste oil tank was removed in 1990 and the five petroleum product <br />tanks removed in 1992. The Colorado Department of Health is requiring <br />additional soil sampling azound the perimeter of both sites to verify that the <br />plume of contamination is confined to the immediate areas. On April 23rd up to <br />five shallow holes will be drilled and sampled at these sites, west and north of <br />the existing warehouse/shop building. The results will be submitted in MCC's <br />follow-up Corrective Action Plan to the Department of Health, along with <br />another request for closure. <br />
