How much of the available topsoil will be used in reclamation? To what
depth will areas be topsoiled?
In our judgment all disturbed areas must be topsoiled to a depth capable
of supporting vegetation.
2. What is the "final use" designated for the lakes-wildlife or recreation?
If the lakes are for wildlife they should have irregular contoured shorelines,
islands, differential sloping adjacent to the waterline, fish stocked,
bottom unevenly shaped, shrubs planted along portions of the shoreline, etc.
It is our opinion that lakes or bodies of water, in themselves, should not be
considered "final reclamation." They are nothing more than the result of
mining - not the result of an effort to return an area of disturbance to
one of productivity.
3. Will all cottonwoods be left intact?
We urge that all mature trees be left undisturbed. They have enormous
wildlife value.
4. Will shrubs and trees be planted along the edges of the pit and adjacent
to the commercial and residential areas?
Tree and shrub plantings will lessen the impacts to wildlife from the
loss of present vegetation.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Monte Pascoe, Executive Director • WILDLIFE COMMISSION,Wilbur Redden, Chairman
Donald Fernandez, Vice Chairman • James Smith, Secretory • Jean K.
