As you are no doubt
aware, the mid-West leas been suffering from extreme adverse
weather conditions. President Carter has just designated the
entire state of I1.Linois a national disaster area due to the
tremendous amount of snowfall there. Because of these weather
conditions, the unit coal trains which serve our customer
(Northern Indiana Public Service Company) have been stranded in
Chicago for the last week. Consequently, the Orchard Valley
Mine has not received the regular train service necessary to
deplete its coal supply.
The Orchard Valley Mine has not received a unit train
since January 10. As the storage capacity in our silos was
reached, we began to use emergency storage on the crushing and
screening bench. That area is now filled to capacity; and
faced with the possibility of shutting tl~e mine down, we elec-
ted to stcre coal in an area close to the train loadout.
The area which I described to you by telephone can be
found on Map C-1 of our permit application. It is located in
the northwest corner of Section 32. It is an area which has
been designated as "Affected Lands" and consists of A,38 acres
on the northwest side of the railroad spur.
umur ni
~~. ,,,
. , ,. , I 11L„,
