Savage SAV~G
RE Wyoming Fuel Canadina Strip Seed Mix
i File No. C-026-81
'~, iS
.9s requested, Z have looked over the Canadian Strip seed mix and accompanying
narrative and have the following comments:
Se d Mi x
i
.1.1 In the narrative, Wyoming Fuel claims that much of the present
vegetation is due to overgrazing (a common claim by most mines with large
cuantities of Sagebrush and Rabbitbrush), and that Idaho Fescue and Bluebunch
[Vheatgrass are under-represented as desirable grasses. However, neither of
these species is incorporated into the seed mix.
?. In both pre-mine (and reference area) communities, Lettermans Needle-
grass and Western Wheatgrass make up a considerable component based on cover
values, but are represented by small quantities in the seed mix. It is my
opinion that Needlegrass and western Wheatgrass should be increased in quantity
.in the seed mix.
3.~ The Division is very hesitant about approving Pubescent Wheatgrass in
:>eed mixes, as it is a very competitive species. At the rate proposed by
[Wyoming Fuel, Pubescent Wheatgrass would probably form a dense monoculture
•reiy quickly.
•9.I Wyoming Fuel should provide discussion relative to 4.15.2 justifying
utilization of any introduced species in the revegetation seed mix.
:i.l It would be very helpful for the applicant to provide a seeds/ftz
breakdown by species for their seed mix.
ti. R11 grasses proposed in the seed mix are cool season. Has the applicant
<3ddressed native (pre-mine) seasonality and how the proposed seed mix achieves
the requirement for a 'vegetation of the same seasonal variety'?
