SH ELTON Director <br />Flic hartl D Lamm <br />Governor ^ ~ , <br />~V iL <br />~~ t- <br />(, ~r `\~. <br />\~ <br />T0: Brian Munson Fed Banta <br />FRUM: Dan Mathews ~ <br />RE: North Fork Coal Loaddut <br />January 25, 1983 <br />I visited the site of the rail loadout being constructed hear Bowie, on <br />the North Fork of the Gunnison on the afternoon of January c0, 1983. <br />The site is located on what appears to be the first alluvial terrace <br />above the present flood plain of the North Fork, on the north side of the <br />railroad tracks. An orchard is located immediately to the north of the <br />disturbance, and it appears that a small portion of the orchard has been <br />taken out of production by the construction. <br />E Estimated total disturbance is approximately 15-20 acres, including a <br />constructed cut/fill bench of approximately 10-15 acres. A small <br />sediment pond was constructed near the eastern edge of the bench. No <br />diversion ditches have been constructed and there appeared to be no <br />sediment control below the outslope of the bench. <br />Topsoil has been salvaged, but it appears to be a relatively small amount <br />yiven the size of the disturbance and the depth of the topsoil adjacent <br />to the cut. If the premine land use was irrigated orchard (as it <br />appears) a finding of reclamation feasibility would be dependent on the <br />adequacy of the topsoil salvage. <br />If open CGaI storage is to be permitted on the bench, a large ber,n should <br />be constructed around the perimeter of the pad area to prevent spillage <br />of coal over the outslope and the outslopes should be seeded with <br />perennial grasses to control erosion. <br />Final surface grading should insure that runoff from the surface of the <br />bench is directed to the sediment pond, and does not flow over the bench <br />423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver.
