This inspection determined that a problem existed with wells owned by Mr. Elmer
Andrews and requested information from Bucklen Equipment Company regarding local
monitoring data which might establish a relationship between Mr. Andrews wells and
dewatering activities associated with the Bucklen Equipment Company sand and gravel pit.
After contacting Central Colorado Water Conservancy District (CCWCD), USGS Water
Resources, Groundwater Appropriators of the South Platte River Basin, Inc. (GASP), Northern
Colorado Water Conservancy District (NCWCD), and Northern Front Range Water Quality
Planning Association, it became apparent that monitoring data is not available in this area.
However, a discussion with :Forest Leaf of CCWCD did reveal that monitoring wells
downstream neaz the Cache la Poudre/South Platte confluence show a slight increase in
groundwater levels. Due to the lack of local information available, we cannot show any
connection between the local drought and groundwater levels in the area.
Another possible cause for the apparent decline in the water table is decreased irrigation from
ditches in the area. Although the water flow in the ditch itself contributes to aquifer recharge,
application of the water through irrigation can greatly increase the amount of groundwater
recharge. If irrigation has decreased in the past one or two years due to development or
because crops have become unprofitable, the amount of recharge would have decreased
accordingly.
11990 Gr Street, Suite 410 • Denver, Colorado 80233 • (303) 452-6611 • Fax (303) 452-27 . ~ ,~
