Our inspection took place on May
26, 2000. Water samples were not collected as part of our inspection. Mine representative
Thomas Rosemayer showed our representative the site. This letter summarizes our findings.
Water dischazges from the Camp Bird Mine were formerly operated under Colorado Dischazge
Permit Number CO-0026981, The Division terminated the permit based on the cessation of
mining process water dischazges, the portal discharge meeting water quality standards, and
removal of the settling ponds. You were informed of the permit termination in a letter dated
February 13, 1998.
The mine is currently undergoing surface reclamation. This activity is covered under the
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology, under permit #M1982-090. Activities over the past
few yeazs have resulted in removal of the outfalls identified in the Water Quality Control
Division's permit. The ttu'ee main reclamation areas at the mine are identified as the l4 Level,
West Tailings, and East Tailings. Our observations of these azeas are presented below.
14 Level:
The 14 Level contains the mine portal and milling azeas. In the discharge permit, Outfall 001
was for water from the mine portal. The water was directed through a Z-foot parshall flume,
crossed over Imogene Creek in a culvert, routed through a settling pond, then discharged to the
creek. Outfal1001 was located at 37° 58.92 north, 107° 43.62 west.
At the time of our inspection, the culvert had been removed and the flow was going directly into
the creek. The current dischazge location is 37° 58.22 north, 107° 43.61 west, The flume depth
was observed at 0.57 feet. indicating a flow of Z.17 million gallons per day (MGD).
C:IAAPROJ\Sartmigue\026981.-!
