PERMIT #: M- 1978 -283
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: TOD
INSPECTION DATE: June 20, 2013
OBSERVATIONS
This was a normal routine monitoring inspection conducted by Tyler O'Donnell of the Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety (Division). There was no representative present from The Walsenburg Sand and Gravel
Company during the inspection. The Division spoke with a representative from the company and received
permission to inspect the site without a representative of the company present. The Sand Arroyo Pit is
located approximately 6 miles west of Walsenburg Colorado. The Sand Arroyo Pit is permitted as a sand and
gravel pit. The approved permit area is 52.00 acres. The approved post- mining land use is rangeland.
The sky was clear and the ground was dry. The site had a processing plant which was operational during the
inspection. The current disturbance appeared to be roughly 35 acres.
Financial Warranty:
The reclamation cost estimate for this pit was updated with this inspection. It was found that the current
bond amount is adequate to cover the cost of reclamation.
Hydrologic Balance:
The pit excavation is located in a dry arroyo. The bottoms of the pits were dry. There was no evidence of
excessive erosion. There appeared to be no significant impacts to the prevailing hydrologic balance.
Gen. Compliance With Mine Plan:
The operation appeared to be following the approved mine plan. All mining activity appeared to be within the
marked boundaries approved in the permit conversion CN -01.
Roads:
The access road was in good condition.
Recl Plan /Comp:
This site has not yet been reclaimed.
Revegetation:
There were annual weeds observed during the inspection. The desired vegetation has established very well in
the majority of the permitted area. The growth appeared to be volunteer vegetation.
Tamarisk (salt cedar) trees are present within or have volunteered into the permit area and are becoming
established. This will be cited as a problem in this inspection report and will require corrective action.
Erosion /Sedimentation:
There was no evidence of excessive erosion (rills, gullies, or sediment fans).
Signs and Markers:
A mine I.D. sign was located at the entrance to the mine site, however the sign was not legible. This will be
cited as a problem in this inspection report and will require corrective action. The permit boundary was
clearly marked by t- posts.
