Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collom Mine, Colorado 4
2.0 RESEARCH DESIGN
This section presents the research design developed for Sites 5MF969, 5FMF3996, 5MF4003,
and 5MF6098 in order to mitigate the adverse effects to these NRHP - eligible sites resulting
from the implementation of the Colowyo mining activities.
Data recovery excavations are the most appropriate means of mitigating the adverse effects to
Sites 5MF969, 5FMF3996, 5MF4003, and 5MF6098. As required by the current regulation
(36 Code of Federal Regulations [C.F.R.] 800.5), the following issues have been considered and
addressed: 1) these four sites are significant chiefly for the information on prehistory that they
are likely to yield through archaeological excavation; 2) these four sites are not likely to contain
human remains or associated funerary objects, sacred objects, or items of cultural patrimony;
3) these four sites do not have long -term preservation value (e.g., traditional, cultural, and
religious sites); 4) these four sites do not possess any known special significance to another
ethnic group or community; and 5) these four sites are not of value for permanent in situ display
or public interpretation. Completion of the proposed data recovery investigations will establish
a condition of no adverse effect.
These five site - specific research topics relevant to this investigation can be divided into a set
of interrelated problem domains including features and feature technology, lithic technology and
material cultural, subsistence patterns, and site activities. These research topics will aid in
developing the data gaps discussed in Reed and Metcalf (1999). Specific research topics and
associated questions for each of these domains are provided below. The following research
questions will allow for comparisons between the sites, thereby providing an opportunity to gain
a clearer understanding of prehistoric hunter - gatherer use of the area.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
