Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collom Mine, Colorado 5
2.1 FEATURE TECHNOLOGY
Research Topic 1: What types of basin features are present within each component? What
configurations and combinations of feature types are present within each component? Do
feature types and configurations differ between components? Are certain feature forms or types
limited to and /or representative of certain temporal periods? Are different types and
configurations of basin features associated with specific sets of activities, based on the overall
patterning of associated remains? What are those activities?
Basin features differ in form along a number of parameters that include structure, morphology,
quantity of fill rock, form of charcoal, etc., and particular combinations and configuration of
basin features are likely to differ between components. Some of these differences appear to
correspond to differences in feature function and use (Horvath 1980). Stiger (1998b:65), for
example, experimented with replicas of feature types represented at the Tenderfoot site and
plans further experimentation. Within the Northern Colorado Basin, considerable variety is
present in the range of features and in the quality and accessibility of their descriptions
(Reed and Metcalf 1999:82). Likewise, in the Gunnison Basin, their characteristics are one of
the aspects of technological organization used to look at temporal changes ( Stiger 1998b:
Table 7.1). An understanding of basin feature function will in turn provide further data
concerning overall site function.
Concurrent shifts in other classes of associated remains may provide more insight into feature
function and differences in feature function and feature technology through time and between
regions. A more - clarified understanding of the spatial and temporal distribution of such feature
types has the potential to yield further insight into basin feature technology, basin feature
function, subsistence and settlement patterns, and cultural affiliations and associations.
A detailed investigation of the types of artifacts, animal and plant remains, and other associated
remains with various feature attributes and frequencies should provide additional data in regards
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
