Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collom Mine, Colorado 23
Two retouched flakes were recovered. Retouched Flake 1 is made from an opaque white chert
flake and exhibited 1.3 cm of retouch along a single lateral margin. The overall flake measures
3.2 x 2.5 x 0.3 em. Retouched Flake 2 is made from a gray chert flake that was retouched along
a single lateral side. The flake measures 5.2 x 4.6 x 0.8 cm, and the retouched portion of the
flake measures 4.0 cm.
The single sidescraper recorded at the site, Scraper 1, is made from a tan chert and measures
5.6 x 4.7 x 1.3 cm. The scraper is made from a tertiary flake with a worked steep lateral angle.
Three choppers were recovered. Chopper 1 is a sandstone cobble exhibiting working on two
lateral edges that create steep angles. The chopper measures 14.7 x 11.2 x 4.8 cm. Chopper 2
is a sandstone cobble that was worked along both lateral edges, with heavy usewear. The
chopper measures 17.9 x 11.6 x 6.4 cm. Chopper 3 is a chert cobble exhibiting steep bifacial
flaking along the proximal edge that appears utilized. The chopper measures 9.0 x 6.2 x 3.0 cm.
Most of the 789 pieces of debitage recorded at the site consist of white chert flakes (n = 469;
59.4 %), followed by brown, black, gray, and tan chert. Six obsidian flakes also were recorded
at the site. Approximately 80% of the flakes are tertiary, with about 12% secondary and 8%
primary.
Nine pieces of groundstone were recovered. Groundstone 1 is a mano with one pecked face
made from a rounded sandstone river cobble. The groundstone measures 14.6 x 8.5 x 4.0 em,
and the pecked portion of the mano measures 6.0 x 3.2 cm. Groundstone 2 is a sandstone metate
measuring 56.3 x 31.2 x 2.7 em with one significantly ground face. The grinding surface
measures 24.0 x 13.0 cm. Groundstone 3 is a sandstone metate measuring 30.3 x 21.2 x 6.9 cm
with a single grinding surface exhibiting moderate use. The grinding surface covers one side
completely. Groundstone 4 is a metate fragment measuring 14.2 x 13.2 x 6.0 cm with a grinding
surface that exhibits moderate use. The metate may have been damaged by a plow. A single
entire side is ground. Groundstone 5 is a sandstone mano with a single grinding surface that
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
