Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Colloni Mine, Colorado 19
The historic component at Site 5MF4003 is recommended as non - contributing. It is not
associated with significant national, regional, or local historic events. It was settled relatively
late (1925), and does not factor into settlement during the territorial period or early Colorado
statehood. It is not associated with an individual (Augustus Merritt) of extraordinary historic
significance. The building and structures on the site are in ruins, have poor physical integrity,
and possess no significant engineering or architectural attributes of design, materials, or
workmanship. The materials are of local origin. The site has no potential to further the
understanding of local or regional historic settlement, subsistence, or socioeconomics patterns.
The site is eligible for the NRHP under Criterion D and currently lies approximately 1,000 ft
(305 m) outside of the northeastern boundary of the revised project boundary, but it is adjacent
to the proposed access road and pipeline corridor. Disturbance to the site would cause an
adverse effect. The scope of work is included in Section 4.3 below. Based on the research
design, questions concerning lithic technology and subsistence patterns may be addressed at this
site.
3.4 SITE 5MF6098
Site Description: Site 5MF6098 is a multicomponent site consisting of a large prehistoric
artifact scatter and a historic mining /ranching site in the southwestern corner of the site. The
site is located along the floodplain of Collom Creek at the boundary between the uplift of the
Danforth Hills and the Axial Basin. To the west of the site is a steep - sided, flat- topped,
north /south- trending ridge and to the east is a northwest /southeast - trending ridge (Figure 3.4).
Sediments at the site consist of a deep alluvially derived silty -clay loam. Sediment is at least
7 m deep as indicated by the incised meander of Collom Creek. Minimal gravels ( <5%) were
noted throughout the site and consist of poorly sorted sandstone rocks ranging in size from
pebbles to cobbles. Vegetation at the site consists of sagebrush, bunchgrass, cheatgrass, and
various fortis. The eastern floodplain of Collom Creek has more grasses, and the western
ftoodplain is mostly dense sagebrush. Overall, vegetation coverage at the site is 50 -75 %.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
