Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collom Mine, Colorado 18
The historic component associated with the site consists of three buildings, an underground
storage structure, a corral, and a surface trash scatter. Building 1 is a log outhouse measuring
69 x 69 inches. Building 2 is log structure with stacked log walls with square- notched corners,
an uncut stone pier foundation, and a pole shed roof with mud filling that measures 19 x 12 ft.
Building 3 is a log structure with stacked log walls with square- notched corners, an uncut stone
foundation, and a wood -plank gabled open- rafter roof measuring 17 x 11 ft. Building 4 is
a stone dugout or root cellar with uncut stone walls, a wood beam and earth roof, and an earthen
foundation that measures 25 x 14 ft. The artifact scatter included in the historic component
consists mostly of building materials (logs, lumber, brick, cement, stone /rock, corrugated metal,
and asphalt /tar paper), along with miscellaneous trash (utensils, stove parts, nuts, bolts, buckets,
wagon /car parts, buttons, fabric, leather, and barrels). Most artifacts are located in the northern
part of the historic component. Overall, the historic portion of the site is in fair condition.
In August of 2005, TRC Mariah revisited the site as part of the current Collom Mine Expansion
project. During the revisit, the prehistoric component appeared to be the same as its original
1995 recording with possible additional material now eroding from the cutbanks, especially
the western cutbank. The new material consisted of 15+ opaque white chert debitage,
10+ heat - altered rocks, and two manos. Because the original 1995 recording did not plot exactly
what artifacts were eroding from which areas, TRC Mariah was unable to determine which
artifacts were exposed in 1995 and which are newly eroded. The historic component appears
to have been slightly impacted by upgrading of the road passing through it, but overall the
historic component appears unchanged from its original condition.
NRHP Eligibility Recommendation: In 1995, Site 5MF4003 was recommended as potentially
eligible for the NRHP under Criterion D due to what appeared to be a possible deeply buried
prehistoric component, and the Colorado OAHP officially concurred with that assessment.
During the 2005 inventory evaluation, the likely existence of a buried cultural component was
confirmed. Testing will be required to assess these buried deposits and determine their nature
and extent. Subsurface testing and data recovery excavations are required to determine the
extent of cultural material extant at the site.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
