Class IIIInventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 43
6.1.4 Site 5MF6062 (JWP -S -12
Site Tyne: Historic cairn
Legal Location: Section 10, T4N, R94W
Landowner: Private
Site Dimensions: 3 x 3 ft
Site Description: Site 5MF6062 is a historic cairn located along the terminus of a
northeast/southwest - trending forger ridge overlooking Axial Basin at 7,040 ft (2,146 m) (Figure 6.8).
There is no drainage in the immediate vicinity. The general area is characterized by
northeast - trending ridges separated by gulches. Soils consist of fine- grained sandy silty clay with
tabular sandstone gravels. The site lies on top of a sandstone outcrop. Vegetation consists of
sagebrush, low grasses, and forbs.
The cairn consists of 42 pieces of tabular sandstone piled three courses high and arranged in a
circular fashion (Figure 6.9). The cairn measures 39 1/4 inches north/south by 43 5/16 inches
east/west and is 113/4 inches high. There is a 3 7/8 -inch opening in the center of the cairn. The
tabular sandstones average between 8 1/2 x 3 1/4 x 1 1/16 inches and 11 1/2 x 6 3/4 x 2 3/8 inches
and 16 1/2 x 8 3/4 x 3 5/8 inches. The cairn is derived from the sandstone outcrop that it sits on.
No other artifacts or features are associated with the cairn.
The cairn sits on top of and along the northern edge of an earthen berm. The berm and cairn are
northeast of and above a small dry earthen stock reservoir. An overflow ditch exits the stock tank
to the west. An inlet ditch is located southeast of the earthen reservoir. The cairn seems to have
been assembled to hold a wood fence post upright.
A review of the MTP and Historical Indices for T4N, R94W, and the BLM patent website indicates
that, similar to Site 5MF6101, Julius Raymond Wagner received a Homestead Entry Patent (HE
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
