Binns, Janet
From:
Binns, Janet
Sent:
Thursday, July 21, 2011 3:39 PM
To:
Linda Saunders
Subject:
RE: Questions on the Rev Plan
Wednesday August 3rd Is a problem for me. As I stated in my e -mail on July 20th, Thursday August 4th would work for
me. I have no idea what Canada sagebrush is. The two species you inquired about, and that I sent you data sheets
about are Rubber rabbitbrush and Silver sagebrush.
Environmental Protection Specialist II
Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety
phone: (303) 866 -3567 ext. 8107
fax: (303) 832 -8106
From: Linda Saunders [mailto:saunders615 @live.com]
Sent: Thursday, July 21, 20113:33 PM
To: Binns, Janet
Subject: RE: Questions on the Rev Plan
Rick Romero (NR &C) hasn't heard of Canada sagebrush or wormwood in Fremont County. It is not on their plant species
list. He did say it can take over and cattle will not graze it. It is of little value to all species of livestock. We would like an
agricultural use like grazing in the future.
He is the source for the toxicity as well.
The reason why we are not getting a good grass mixture and only rubber rabbitbrush at the portal and pond areas is the
broken up concrete slab that is buried under those areas. Grasses do not do as well as woody plants in rocky areas.
Aslo my computer does not have the programs to download information for the Minor Revision referred to in the 2006
Revegatation Report by Kent. What was the revision?
Thank you for the infomation on the introduced Intermediate and Crested Wheatgrass. Is Wester Wheatgrass also
introduced?
What grasses were used in the final mix and at what PLS per acre rate?
Since they are agressive I am glad they are not recommended, but what is recommended instead.
Why do we have so few grasses in the revegatation count?
I hope Paula can join us on Wed Aug 3rd. That is her day off.
Linda
Subject: Questions on the Rev Plan
Date: Thu, 21 Jul 2011 13:53:38 -0600
From: Janet.Binns @state.co.us
To: saunders615 @live.com
Hello Linda,
All this information is available in the Division's Lazerfische system on -line. You may find the answers in the permit file
and in the Annual Reclamation Reports.
Please find attached a plant Guide for Rubber Rabbitbrush published by the Natural Resource Conservation Service
(NRCS). Plants Database Conservation Plant Characteristic sheet for Silver sagebrush (available on the NRCS Plants
Database http: / /plants.usda.gov ). As you can see by the NRCS sheet, Silver sage is not reported to have any toxicity , "
Toxicity= None". Rabbitbrush has benefits to wildlife. After 30 years of reclamation experience the Division has
recognized the aggressive behavior of Crested Wheatgrass and Intermediate Wheatgrass. Although we do still allow
