HOMESTAKE MINING COMPA
BULLDOG MOUNTAIN OPERATION
EXHIBIT G
WATER INFORMATION
G -i INTRODUCTION
The Bulldog Mountain Operation lies in the Rio Grande drainage,
more particularly in the Willow Creek basin which, encompasses 41.4 square
miles and contributes four percent of the average annual flow of the Rio
Grande as measured at Wagon Wheel Gap just east of Creede. Elevation of
the confluence of Willow Creek with the Rio Grande is approximately 8700
feet while its headwaters are in excess of 13,000 feet at several locations.
Annual surface stream flow of Willow Creek at Creede for the 1951-
1974 24 -year period is 22.3 cubic feet per second. Seasonal flows vary
from a low of 4.8 c.f.s. during the winter (December, January, February,
and March) to a high of 69.0 c.f.s. during the snowmelt period (May, June).
Only intermittent surface or spring flows occur within the permit areas
during snowmelt and high precipitation periods.
G -2 WATER REQUIREMENTS AND SOURCE
Water requirements for the mine and mill consist primarily of
mill process water, mine backfill requirements, cooling, sanitation and
domestic plant needs. All process water is recycled between the mill and
tailings ponds. Make -up water is needed to replace losses from evapora-
tion and water entrapped in the tailings.
Water rights for the Bulldog Mountain Operation were purchased
together with real property in the San Luis Valley. A portion of the 1872
water right, c.f.s., was transferred to the Creede point of diversion
