Fall 2012 Subsidence and Geologic Field Observations
Box Canyon, Apache Rocks, and South of Divide Mining Areas
3.0 TRAVERSES AND OBSERVATIONS IN THE BOX CANYON, APACHE
ROCKS, AND SOD MINING AREAS
A discussion of observations associated with traverses A -A' through P -P' is provided in this
section (Maps 1 and 2). Several of the photographs obtained during the October 2012 field visit
are included as figures in the text of this report. Where these images have notable differences
from comparable photographs taken in previous years, some of the older images are also
included for comparison purposes. However, to reduce the overall size of this document,
narrative text and photographs for traverses with no observed changes are excluded.
Photographs were obtained from each of the photographic observation points (excluding
Photographic Observation Points 1, 2. 8, 8A, and 11 as discussed later) and compared to
previous years for identifiable changes. If no changes were noted, the photographic images from
these locations were archived and not included in this report.
3.1 Traverse A -A' Through H -H'
Traverses A -A' through H -H' were each visited during October 2012 (Maps 1 and 2). Traverse
A -A' was cut short due to ongoing heavy - vehicle activities in and around the Refuse Pile
Expansion East area making it somewhat dangerous to negotiate through the area. As a result,
WWE was unable to visit the Photographic Observation Points 8 and 8A to obtain comparative
photographs of the landslides on the western edge of West Flatiron. In addition, only a portion of
Traverse E -E' was observed due to a MCC - placed barrier at the narrowest point on the road
across West Flatiron. This semi - permanent barrier was placed at the direction of the US Forest
Service to prevent public access to this area. This barrier precluded our visit to the northern end
of Traverse E -E' and Photographic Observation Points 1 and 2.
Observation notes and photographic documentation were recorded along Traverses A -A' through
H -H' as appropriate (except as noted above). However, no noticeable changes were observed
between the spring and fall 2012 field visits (both as observed in the field and in comparison of
photographs taken from previous field visits). Because of this, specific details associated with
831 - 032.794
April 2013
Wright Water Engineers, Inc. Page 5
