REVEGETATION
The majority of the King I Mine was .previously mined _and not reclaimed to the
requirements of the Colorado Surface Coal Mining Reclamation Act (34-33-101 et
seq.). The only area disturbed subsequent to the initiation of the permanent
program was a portion of the waste pile comprising 1.08 .acres. As such the
revegetation of the King I Mine will be designed and implemented to conform to the
requirements of Rule 4.15.10. The revegetation measures will be undertaken to
provide and establish a cover of living plants supportable by the best available
suitable material in those areas. of the mine re-affected by disturbance subsequent
to the permanent program, with ground cover not less than that existing prior to re-
disturbance and satisfactory to control erosion.
Grazing will be prevented in the reclaimed area for a period of at least three
years to allow a successful establishment of vegetation.
The disturbed area will not be ready for reseeding until the mine is
abandoned, graded and covered with plant growth medium. The access road will not
be reclaimed. It will provide access to the reclaimed area for fire control, reclamation}
work, and inspection. After the coal and mine rock surface layers have been scraped
up and used for backfill, no toxic forming maten7als will seriously inhibit plant
growth.
After grading and re-contouring the mine bench and covering the area with
.suitable plant growth medium, the disturbed area will be reseeded on _slopes ranging
from less than 3:1 to2:1 on the highwalls.
After placement and spreading of plant growth medium, samples will be taken
.and forwarded to _a soil laboratory for .analysis for major plant nutrients .and
restrictive ions. Upon receipt of the test results and recommendation by testing
laboratory, the correct amount of fertilizer will be applied.
Plant growth medium preparation will be accomplished by using a disk or
harrow capable of disturbing the soil to a depth of 4". In case of a loose seed bed, a
cultipacker to firm the ground will be used following .drilling..
On slopes of 3:1 or less the seed should be planted with a drill equipped with
double disc openers and depth bands. Spacing of discs should be no more than 10".
Seed should be planted to an approximate depth no deeper than 1 / 2" . On slopes of
3:1 or greater, broadcast seeding may be used. Planting of seed will occur between
October i5 and April 30, or between July i5 and August 30.
Upon completion of drill seeding, all areas will receive two (2) tons of hay or
straw mulch per acre. The material is to be applied in an even manner by use of
hand mulching or a mechanical blower. On 3:1 slopes or less the mulch will be
crimped into the soil by use of a straight blade crimper of spacing of not more than
10" .
Since no pre-disturbance vegetation data was collected, the following re-
vegetation success standards are based on SCS Range site data and baseline data
from similar areas.
