2012 Mountain Brush Reference Area
(Photographs 25 through 28)
COVER
(Table A -7)
Native shrubs were the predominant lifeform observed in the Mountain Brush Reference Area,
contributing 64.8 percent all -hit vegetation cover. Of this, Gambel's oak (Quercus gambelii) contributed
37.6 percent, mountain snowberry and Saskatoon serviceberry each contributed 11.9 percent. Native
perennial cool season grasses and native perennial forbs and made strong contributions to all -hit cover,
with 17.3 and 9.5 percent, respectively.
The noxious weed species, Hound's tongue (Cynoglossum officinale) measured 2.3% cover. Other
noxious weed species that were present but not in measured amounts include bull thistle (Cirsium
vulgare) and Canada Thistle (Breea arvensis).
Total average vegetation cover for first hits was 68.7 percent. Allowable all -hit herbaceous vegetation
cover was 28.9 percent (Table C -1). Cover by standing dead, litter, bare soil and rock averaged 2.1,
23.3, 5.6 and 0.3 percent, respectively (first hit). Average species density was 28.7 species per 100 sq.
m.
PRODUCTION
(Table A -8)
Total herbaceous production in 2012 was 417.5 pounds per acre. Of this, 292.6 pounds were native
perennial cool season grasses and 121.3 were native perennial forbs. Four other lifeforms were present
at less than 2 pounds per acre.
15
