year included: lower portions of Squaw Gulch, a stretch of the east side of County Road
81 as it exits Victor, slopes and intersections near the transfer station and crusher, topsoil
stockpile near the crusher, dump #4 topsoil stockpile, schist topsoil stockpile, and
roadsides leading up to the head frame and south mine entrance. Areas previously treated
by Habitat Management, but not visited this year, include: lower and middle Arequa
Gulch, the Victor Trails, the water quality testing site several miles down Shelf Road,
Victor Leach Field, and fuel storage and electrical facilities.
Herbicides were spot- applied to targeted weed species with a UTV- mounted spray rig in
most areas and with backpack sprayers in less accessible areas. A mixture of Tordon 22K
(picloram), Plateau (imazapic) and Milestone (aminopyralid) was applied to patches of
Canada thistle, musk thistle, yellow toadflax, Dalmatian toadflax and common mullein in
the lower Squaw Gulch and County Road 81 area. A mixture of Milestone
(aminopyralid), Tordon 22K and Telar (chlorsulfuron) was used for County Road 81,
slopes and intersections near the transfer station and crusher, the topsoil stockpile near
the crusher, dump #4 topsoil stockpile, schist topsoil stockpile, and roadsides leading up
to the head frame and south mine entrance. These mixtures of herbicides were used to
reduce the risk of developing herbicide resistant weed populations. The differing
mixtures were formulated based on the species observed in these areas as well as
herbicide application records from previous years. These herbicides are broadleaf
selective and have a very low potential for injury to surrounding desirable, native grass
species. A surfactant, MSO Premium, was included in the herbicide mixture to increase
leaf adhesion and absorption. Additionally, blue marker dye was included in the mixture
to track applications. Appendix A contains an inventory of dates, quantities, and
application rates of all herbicides and surfactants.
Sites Managed
Lower Squaw Gulch
Herbicide treatments in Lower Squaw Gulch were conducted on July 10. The area
includes east side of Shelf Road, extending '/z mile west of Hwy 67 on Shelf Road to
Teller County Road 88. In this area, Canada thistle, yellow toadflax, Dalmatian toadflax,
musk thistle and common mullein were treated. Weed infestations consisted of small
2
