Reclamation Area 23 had four species contributing greater than three percent relative
vegetation cover this year. The species contributing greater than three percent relative
cover included four perennial grasses. These species included Calumovilfa longifolia
(56.04 %), Andropogon ha/lii (27.47 %), Bouteloua curtipendula (10.99 %), and Bouteloua
gracilis (3.30 %).
3.2 QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION: RECLAMATION AREA 29
Reclamation Area 29 encompasses 8.10 acres of reclamation in one parcel within the
Keenesburg Mine permit area. Reclamation Area 29 was formerly part of the B Pit
mining area and was reclaimed to a gently east - sloping landform blending into the native
undisturbed area to the west and the reclaimed mining and operational areas to the east.
Final revegetation seeding with the permanent seed mix took place in the autumn of
2003. Specific vegetation information for Reclamation Area 29 is contained in Tables 1,
3, and 6.
3.2.1 Vegetation Cover
Total mean vegetation cover of Reclamation Area 29 was 30.60 percent. Graminoids
provided 29.80 percent total cover (97.22% relative cover), succulents accounted for 0.40
percent total cover (1.1] % relative cover), and woody plants contributed 0.40 percent
total cover (1.67% relative cover). The most frequently encountered species were the
warm season perennial native grasses Calamovilfa longifolia and Bouteloua gracilis,
present in all transects. The warm season perennial native Bouteloua curtipendula was
found in 60 percent of transects. Six species were encountered in four or fewer transects.
Within Reclamation Area 29, Calarnovilfa longifolia was dominant, with contributions of
16.40 percent total and 50.56 percent relative cover this growing season. Three
additional species encountered contributed three or more percent relative cover including;
Bouteloua gracilis with 8.20 percent mean (28.89% relative cover), Bouteloua
curtipendula contributing 2.40 percent total and 8.33 percent relative cover, and
Andropogon hallii contributing 1.20 percent total cover and 4.44 percent relative cover.
Vegetative litter (prior years growth and other biologic organic material) comprised 51.80
percent ground cover overall within Reclamation Area 29 this season. Bare soil
accounted for 17.60 percent of the ground cover. No rock or cryptogams were
encountered during the cover sampling this year.
3.2.2 Herbaceous Production
Total herbaceous production within Reclamation Area 29 was 93.2 g /m (831 lb /ac) this
year. All herbaceous production was contributed by perennial grasses in Reclamation
Area 29 this season.
Coors Energy Company Keenesburg Mine Page 11
2012 Revegetation Monitoring Report
