3.0 RESULTS
3.1 QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION: RECLAMATION AREA 23
Reclamation Area 23 encompasses 0.66 acres of reclamation in one parcel within the
Keenesburg Mine permit area. Reclamation Area 23 was formerly access to the B Pit
mining area and was reclaimed to a gently west - sloping landform blending into the
reclaimed B Pit to the west and older reclaimed mining areas to the east. Final
revegetation seeding with the permanent seed mix took place in the autumn of 2002.
Specific vegetation information for Reclamation Area 23 is contained in Tables 1, 2, and
6.
3.1.1 Vegetation Cover
Total mean vegetation cover of Reclamation Area
Graminoids provided all vegetation cover within this
season native perennial grasses were encountered
(sand bluestem) and Calamovilfl! Iongifolia (prairie
(sideoats grama), a warm season perennial native
transects. Three additional species were encountered
23 this season was 32.00 percent.
reclaimed area this year. Two warm
in all transects; Andropogon hal/ii
sandreed). Bouteloua curtipendula
grass, was found in 60 percent of
in two or fewer transects.
Within Reclamation Area 23, Calamovilfa longifnlia was dominant, with contributions of
18.80 percent total and 56.04 percent relative vegetation cover this growing season.
Three additional species encountered contributed three or more percent relative cover
including; Andropogon hallii with 9.20 percent total (27.47% relative cover), Bouteloua
curtipendula contributing 2.40 percent total and 10.99 percent relative cover, and
Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama) with 0.80 percent total cover (3.30% relative cover).
Vegetative litter (prior years growth and other biologic organic material) comprised 52.00
percent ground cover overall within Reclamation Area 23 this season. Bare soil
accounted for 16.00 percent of the ground cover. No rock or cryptogams were
encountered during the cover sampling this year.
3.1.2 Herbaceous Production
Total herbaceous production within Reclamation Area 23 was 143.0 g /m (1275 lb /ac)
this year, of which more than 99.99% was contributed by perennial graminoids.
3.1.3 Species Composition
Cover sampling identified one lifeform and six species within Reclamation Area 23 this
season. The graminoid lifeform included five species of perennial grass and one annual
grass species. Of the species encountered in Reclamation Area 23, five were native and
one was introduced. Perennial species outnumbered annual species by five to one. Both
warn and cool season species contributed to the seasonality of the area. Warm season
graminoids outnumbered cool season graminoids by five to one.
Coors Energy Company Keenesburg Mine Page 10
2012 Revegetation Monitoring Report
