Savage and Savage
Memorandum
To:
From:
Date:
Subject:
File #:
Donald W. MacDonald, Coors Energy Company
Michael Savage, Savage and Savage, Inc.
May 30, 2012
Second Quarter 2012 Pest and Disease Inspection; Keenesburg Mine
C -81 -028
On May 29, 2012, I conducted inspections of the operational, reclaimed, revegetated, and
several undisturbed native areas at the Keenesburg Mine for evidence of plant pests,
noxious weeds (defined or identified on List A or B by the Colorado Department of
Agriculture), and plant diseases that could affect the re- established vegetation at the
Keenesburg Mine.
Areas 25, 29, 30, and 31, the permanent sediment pond, dugout, Topsand Piles A -1, B -1,
and A -3, the small cottonwood grove, the long -term spoil area, the bottom and perimeter
of B Pit, the office and shop yard, and several areas outside the former mine disturbance
area were inspected by pedestrian and vehicle means for any potential problems.
The use of pre - emergent herbicide for annuals was particularly effective on Area 25,
where there was no evidence of cheatgrass growth. Areas 29 and 30 likewise did not
show significant evidence of any cheatgrass growth. The south half of Area 31 continued
more cheatgrass than the north half. Danny speculates that this may be attributable to this
area standing longer prior to permanent seeding than the north half of the parcel.
It is notable that the native undisturbed areas along the boundaries of the mine contain
between 15 and 30 percent total vegetation cover of cheatgrass at this time, significantly
more than the revegetated areas of the mine.
I did not identify any disease conditions at any of the operational, reclaimed, or
revegetated areas of the mine site. I did not identify any plant pests which had affected
the growth of the vegetation during this growing season. No areas which experienced any
infestation or blight were found during the inspection. No patches of noxious weed
species were observed, nor were any areas observed where weeds, plant pests, or disease
showed a deleterious effect to the live vegetation.
C: Keenesburg Pest and Disease Inspection File
Danny Kipp, Keenesburg Mine
AHR -2012 -37-
