(IRIS) Senior Scientist Blair Leisure is assisting Cotter
Corporation (N.S.L.) (Cotter) in the Phase 1 mitigation efforts at the Schwartzwalder Mine
located in Golden, Colorado. The purpose of this report is to update both the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers (USACE) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) on the mitigation efforts
completed by Cotter in 2012 at the Schwartzwalder Mine. IRIS worked with contractor
American Civil Contractors (ACC) to kick off this mitigation effort following Phase 1 construction
activities.
In June 2012, ACC completed site clean -up and excavation at four riparian mitigation areas
located just upstream of the cut -off wall (0.07 acre total) and one upland restoration area also
located upstream of the cut -off wall (0.59 acre total). As planned, the 0.04 acre riparian creation
area located farthest to the west had approximately 2 feet of soil excavated with the top 6
inches of topsoil cleaned of rocks and debris and restored to the site. Approximately 6 inches of
soil including rocks and debris were removed from the 0.03 acre central and eastern riparian
mitigation areas. These two areas then received an addition of approximately 6 inches of
imported topsoil. An approximately 0.09 acre riparian restoration area was cleaned of rocks and
debris before having approximately 6 inches of imported topsoil added.
