• Within the mine and immediately adjacent areas the only existing <br />groundwater rights are those for the Corley Mine Well, the Corley Company <br />Well and the Thompson Well as shown on the Mine Area Surface and <br />Groundwater Hydrology Map, (Map 11). The Corley Mine Well produces water <br />from the old Corley Mine workings in the Rex Carbon Seam. The Thompson <br />Well is also completed in the Rex Carbon Seam and was originally tied into <br />the mine dewatering system for the Rex Carbon Mine. As a result of <br />blasting associated with surface mining activities and possible caving of <br />the underground mine workings, underground water lines supplying the <br />Thompson Well were broken. Access was not possible for repairs, use of <br />the Thompson Well was discontinued, and the well has not been utilized for <br />a number of years. The Corley Company Well is completed in the Raton <br />formation and apparently intercepts a small perched groundwater reservoir. <br />Available flow volume for this well is limited, which is characteristic <br />of groundwater flow and storage conditions within this general area as <br />described in Section 2.04.7, Hydrology Information. <br />• As described in Section 2.05.3, Operation Plan - Permit Area, some <br />groundwater inflows encountered in the active mine workings are believed <br />to be the result of infiltration through subsidence fractures which <br />intersect overlying flooded abandoned mine workings. The source of these <br />inflows are believed to be abandoned mine workings in the Vento Seam which <br />is approximately 100-150 feet above the interval mined by the Southfield <br />operations. <br />Existing water rights in the mine and adjacent areas are associated with <br />abandoned mine workings in the Rex Carbon Seam or overlying strata. The <br />Rex Carbon Seam is approximately three hundred feet above the Vento Seam <br />and a total of four hundred feet above the interval being mined. Strata <br />between the interval being mined and both the Vento Seam and Rex Carbon <br />Seams consists of relatively impermeable interbedded and cross-bedded <br />siltstone and shale members. The potential to impact groundwater rights <br />in the mine and adjacent areas is negligible. <br />• EFCI's primary mechanism for prevention of mining related impacts on <br />groundwater rights is subsidence control as addressed later in this <br />section under the subheading, "Subsidence Control" and in Exhibit 16, Roof <br />2.05.6-28 <br />
