tunnels, interceptor canals, control structures , decantation
systems, and pumping facilities. The flood control facilities
at Climax have been analyzed and recommendations have been
developed to assure protection of the Climax facilities after
operations have ceased. The purpose of the flood studies was
to define the flood potential at Climax for the purpose of
determining required facilities to safely route and pass floods
at the end of production.
At Climax, the major volume of surface runoff is from
melting snow. However , there is a potential of intense
thunderstorms occurring in the summer time, which can cause
short duration, high peak flows, with small volumes. Low peak
floods can be expected from snowmelt and can be bypassed with
the water handling facilities required for rain floods.
Snowfloods and rainfloods were calculated and are shown in
Table 8. 6. The following is based upon the above hydrological
conditions and calculations.
a. Arkansas River Drainage. At the cessation of
operations, the Glory Hole and Open Pit area will form a
large catchment basin, with a bottom elevation of
approximately 10, 268 feet ( 1200 Level) . It is believed
that this basin will eventually trap and hold surface and
groundwater and create a lake . Based on a knowledge of
fracturing , faulting , and underground openings, it is
believed that the lake will rise to about the 10 , 868-foot
elevation ( 600 Level ) . The 300-foot difference in
elevation between the 600 Level and the Storke Level will
provide surge capacity, such that all floods will be
contained in this lake. No further flood control should
be necessary in this drainage basin.
b. Tenmile Creek Drainage
( 1 ) Buffehr Reservoir . The existing spillway on
Buffehr Reservoir will handle a "probable maximum
flood . "
( 2 ) Robinson Tailing Pond. The Robinson Tailing
Pond will receive drainage from the camp area,
8-10
