2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION/MINING PLAN
The Climax Mine , its industrial building and process-
ing facilities are located at Climax , Colorado ( elevation
11 ,318 ft. ) at the summit of Fremont Pass where Colorado State
Highway 91 crosses the Continental Divide . Additional Climax
operations and facilities, including the Storke Level , aggre-
gate mining , tailing deposition, fresh and industrial water
reservoirs and pipelines, and fresh water delivery and runoff
diversion canals, extend below Climax within the drainages of
the East Fork Arkansas River, East Fork Eagle River and South
Fork Tenmile Creek, hereafter referred to as the Arkansas
River, Eagle River and Tenmile Creek ( see Base Map, Appendix F.
and end of Section 2 ) .
Colorado State Highway 91 passes through and connects
the Climax property to the town of Leadville, 13 miles south,
r
and to the town of Frisco, 18 miles north. Climax Molybdenum
Company owns approximately 11 ,000 acres of contiguous land
within the Colorado counties of Eagle , Lake and Summit. Climax
is in the process of obtaining additional lands through
exchange with the United States Forest Service . The exchange
lands are located in the same three counties plus Park County.
The Climax Mine uses open pit mining and a panel cav-
ing system of underground mining to remove molybdenite ore from
the Climax deposit. Current production rates average 48, 000
tons per day from which conventional crushing and milling cir-
cuits liberate economic minerals for separation, collection and
further concentration. Approximately 6 pounds of mineral
(molybdenum disulfide , tungsten, tin, and pyrite concentrates)
are recovered from each 2, 000 pounds of processed ore. The re-
maining 1994 pounds is a tailing material composed predomin-
ately of silica. The tailing is transported in a water slurry
via tailing delivery pipelines to deposition areas north of the
mine site . The tailing sands and slimes settle out on the
tailing surface and the water is decanted and pumped back to
the mill within the recycle industrial water circuit.
r --
J
2-1
