Recently enacted research on revegetating haul road
slopes made of Open Pit waste material indicates such material can
be revegetated with the Climax seed mixture , fertilizer and mulch.
Chemical analysis also indicates it to be suitable plant growth
medium if properly amended . Research plots have been established
to determine pyrite-oxidation rates and efficient depths of the
material when placed over tailing for revegetation purposes.
Present plans are to place three feet of the material over the
tailing until more information is obtained . Different rates of
fertilizer , mulch and seeds are being tested, as are seeds and
plants of different species and varieties upon the waste material .
Naturally, Climax can watch the Urad tailing stabilization and
revegetation project for guidance.
This research includes plots with application to
revegetating directly upon waste rock of McNulty Dump and the
waste rock used as base for the Low Grade Ore Stockpile and will
include the use of alpine vegetation within the alpine zone.
Additional research plots have or will be established ?
for the use of topsoil placed over tailing and waste rock material
for revegetating. Only minimum amounts of topsoil will be
available to aid the reclamation of Mayflower Tailing Pond ,
McNulty Dump and the base of the Low Grade Ore Stockpile.
Research plots will be used to determine 1 ) sufficient depths of
topsoil over variable depths of rock waste covering tailing, which
would promote a self-sustaining vegetation; 2 ) uses and rates of
soil amendments; 3 ) the best species seeds and plants to be used
above and below timberline; and 4 ) special methods, procedures and
precautions during preparation, planting and maintenance phases of
reclamation.
10 .11 OPEN PIT AREA ( 1)
Open Pit ( 1) mining is expected to cease near the year
2008; however , the mining plan is to remove waste and ore to final
pit limits on upper portions during Phase II and Phase III .
Very little or no reclamation activity will be applicable to pit
walls and very steep rocky slopes. Reclamation will necessarily
10-9
