The majority of spruce and pine trees probably will be
obtained from the U.S. Forest Service Nursery in Fort Collins,
Colorado and will be planted at the approximate rate of 150-300
trees per acre, depending upon the site. An overall 50% survival
rate is presently anticipated .
Climax has established a tree nursery as a means of
preserving some of the young trees that would otherwise be lost to
advancing mining operations. These trees are transplanted to the
nursery for future planting , if not immediately transplanted to
sites currently being reclaimed .
Aspen exist at the lower elevations of the Climax
property, including areas to be covered by tailing . Selected
aspen trees from this area have been and will continue to be
transplanted to other suitable sites for reclamation and
landscaping .
10. 7 SHRUB PLANTING
Willow cuttings have been employed for revegetation at
the Climax Mine, and a propogation program utilizing the
indigenous source will provide all the plants needed . A
greenhouse, scheduled for improvements and expansion, will be used
to allow root development to occur before planting . Out planting
is generally during late June and July.
In cooperation with the Soil Conservation Services , 150
shrubs ( 15 species) are being grown on subsoil plots to evaluate
their survival and performance . Additionally, several shrub
species are currently being tested for performance on mined rock
waste covering the Urad Mine tailing pond . Information obtained
from these trials will be incorporated into the Climax shrub
planting program. Shrubs of particular interest are shrubby
cinquefoil , raspberry and sagebru,6h, as well as willow.
Shrub planting rates will be approximately 50 to 100 per.
acre with an expected overall survival rate of 50 percent.
10-6
