IV. Sample Preservation, Handling and Analytical Methods <br />Sampled will be preserved, contained and analyzed according to the methods in "EPA Test <br />Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste - Physical /Chemical Methods (SW- 846) ". Table 1 <br />describes the preservation, containerization, and analytical methods that will be used for ground <br />water monitoring. <br />Dissolved manganese samples will be filtered in the field using a 0.45 micron cellulose <br />membrane filter prior to containing in one -liter polyethylene bottles. These samples will be <br />acidified in the field with nitric acid to a pH less than 2.0 and chilled to 4 °C. <br />Chloride and sulfate samples will be collected in one -liter polyethylene bottles and chilled to 4° <br />C. <br />pH shall be measured in the field using a portable pH meter equipped with an electrode <br />following EPA Method 150.1. The pH meter will be calibrated at least daily using two NIST <br />traceable buffer solutions. <br />Sample holding times are as follows: <br />- Manganese 6 months <br />- Chloride 28 days <br />- Sulfate 28 days <br />- pH 24 hours <br />All samples will be, placed into an ice chest and chilled to 4 °C. Adequate packing material will <br />be added to the ice chests to prevent breakage during shipment of samples to the laboratory. <br />All samples will be analyzed by Hazen Research, Inc. or an equally qualified analytical <br />laboratory that implements internal quality control procedures including surrogate spikes and <br />reagent blanks. <br />
