The Climax
Mine followed the down side of this trend in 1986. Climax
began 1986 operating at a rate of 22 , 509 tons/day ( 15 , 590
tons/day from the open pit and 6919 tons/day from underground)
or 47% of total mine capacity. Manpower at the beginning of
1986 was 511 . By December, 1986, the mine employment was down
to 197, and the mine was producing only 7255 tons/day from the
underground operation. The open pit was shut down. The
December production rate represents 15% of capacity. Until
the molybdenum market improves, this downward trend in
production and employment can be expected to continue through
1987.
AFFECTED LANDS
Because of limited production in 1986, affected lands did not
increase significantly during the year. The only area
affected was the Ten Mile tailing pond and dam (Area 13a, b)
which increased areally less than five acres. All tailing
produced during the year was deposited in the Ten Mile pond.
The Mayflower tailing pond continued to be used strictly for
water treatment. Material removed from the open pit while it
operated was deposited primarily on the lean ore stockpile
( now known as the E Dump) with minor amounts deposited on the
McNulty dump. The McNulty dump did not increase in acreage
during 1986 and is not expected to increase in size during the
next few years. Therefore, no additional topsoil was removed
from the toe area of this dump.
