RECLAMATION ACTIVITIES
Reclamation activities during "the year revolved around the
sixty acre Arkansas Aggregate Area (Area W . The five old
Storke settling ponds were excavated and removed . The
entire area was regraded for drainage control and contour.
The Arkansas River was relocated to its approximate origi-
nal channel and routed through the small ponds near the
southwest edge of the Climax property. Approximately 75%
of the area was topsoiled, fertilized and seeded (using the
standard Climax formulas and seed mix) in early October.
Work will continue in that area in 1988 . The river channel
will be rip-rapped as needed to control bank erosion, and
willow cuttings may be planted. In addition, seeding will
be completed in 1988 . Final cost of this particular
project will be in excess of $700, 000 .
In addition to the active reclamation in the Arkansas
Aggregate Area, engineering designs for the highway under-
pass were essentially completed during the year. This road
crossing of Colorado Highway 91 will be constructed in 1988
and will initiate major stabilization/reclamation activi-
ties in the Robinson tailing pond area.
INSPECTION/ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITY
During 1987 , Climax was inspected by the Colorado Air
Pollution Control Division (APCD) for wind blown tailing
dust and for compliance with the Climax Dust Suppression
Control Plan (on file with the APCD and the MLRD as a
Technical Revision approved in early 1987 ) . Climax was
given a clean inspection report from the APCD. Controlling
blowing tailing dust was a major problem during the very
dry and abnormally long snow-free period during 1987 . The
dust suppression program began in mid-May and continued
into early October at a cost of more than $250 , 000 . The
program was a significant improvement over 1986, and
generally was quite effective . Only one citizen complaint
was received, and an immediate response letter was sent to
this individual . The dust suppression program will
continue in 1988.
ANTICIPATED 1988 ACTIVITY
A primary activity in 1988 will be writing and filing a
major amendment to the Climax permit. This process, initi-
ated in 1987, will bring the permit and reclamation plan I
into closer conformity with the present and anticipated
future operation scenarios at the mine. In addition, the
amendment will present more concise, realistic and workable
scheduling and reclamation plans as well as new , more
-2-
